BINGHAMTON GEOMETRY/TOPOLOGY SEMINAR
Date: Thursday, February 17, 2005
Time: 2.50 pm
Place: Library North 2205 followed by coffee/tea in the Anderson
Reading Room.
Speaker: Mohan Ramachandran (SUNY Buffalo)
Title: Filtered ends of Kahler groups and surjective morphisms to
Fuchsian groups
Abstract: I will discuss the following theorem of T. Napier and
myself. If the number of filtered ends of a Kahler group is at least
three then a finite index subgroup maps onto a cocompact Fuchsian
group with finitely generated kernel. This result can be used to show
that Thompson's group F and some of its generalizations are not Kahler,
answering a question of Ross Geoghegan.
NOTE: The seminar has a webpage where the semester's program is listed:

It can also be linked from the Department's Home Page.
