                   BINGHAMTON GEOMETRY/TOPOLOGY SEMINAR


   Date: Thursday, February 17, 2005

          Reading Room.

   Speaker:  Mohan Ramachandran (SUNY Buffalo)

   Title: Filtered ends of Kahler groups and surjective morphisms to
   Fuchsian groups

   Abstract: I will discuss the following theorem of T. Napier and
   myself. If the number of filtered ends of a Kahler group is at least
   three then a finite index subgroup maps onto a cocompact Fuchsian
   group with finitely generated kernel. This result can be used to show
   that Thompson's group F and some of its generalizations are not Kahler,
   answering a question of Ross Geoghegan.
