Title: Twist-rim surgery and surfaces in 4-manifolds

Abstract: In this talk, I will introduce a surgery operation referred to as
'twist-rim surgery' to change embeddings of surfaces in 4-manifolds. This
surgery is a modification of the rim surgery introduced by Fintushel-Stern
and provides 'exotic' knotted surfaces in a 4-manifold: surfaces whose
embeddings are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. Twist-rim surgery has
been applied to knotting algebraic curves in CP^2 and led to solve the
problem 4.110 in the classic Kirby Problem List, namely finding surfaces
in CP^2 that are homologous to smooth algebraic curves (called degree
d-curve),but are not smoothly isotopic to them.
