                   BINGHAMTON GEOMETRY/TOPOLOGY SEMINAR
Our speaker this week is Matt Clay, who will also be giving an informal
introduction to mapping class groups in our graduate student seminar
Toeholds in Topology, Thursday 12:05-1:05 in LN-2205.

*Date:* Thursday, April 7, 2011
*Time:* 2:50-3:50pm
*Place:* Library North 2205 followed by coffee/tea in the Anderson Reading
Room.

*Speaker:* Matt Clay (Allegheny College)
Title: The geometry of right-angled Artin subgroups of the mapping class
group

*Abstract:* We describe sufficient conditions which guarantee that a finite
set of mapping classes generate a right-angled Artin group
quasi-isometrically embedded in the mapping class group. Moreover, under
these conditions, the orbit map to Teichmüller space is a quasi-isometric
embedding for both of the standard metrics.
